What one measurement gives you

Resting pulse

Beats per minute, graded against the typical range for your age and gender — not one fixed 60–100 band.

Heart-rate variability

RMSSD on every reading. SDNN, pNN50 and beat-to-beat spread with PRO.

Stress & energy

Two 0–100 figures read from the timing between beats: how tense you are, and how ready for load.

Heart Score

One number from 0 to 100, with the four parts it is built from shown separately.

Heart age

Your pulse and variability compared with what is typical at your age, bounded to 15 years either way.

Breathing rate

Counted from the rhythm breathing leaves in your pulse — shown only when the recording supports it.

How a camera reads your pulse

Each heartbeat pushes blood through your fingertip, and blood absorbs light. The flash lights your finger, the camera sees the change, and the app counts the beats — the principle behind photoplethysmography (PPG).

  1. 1

    Cover the camera

Rest one fingertip over the rear camera and the flash. Don't press — pressing squeezes out the blood being measured.

  2. 2

    Hold still for 45 seconds

Breathe normally. If your finger moves, the app starts over rather than invent beats across the gap.

  3. 3

    Read your result

Pulse, variability, stress, energy and Heart Score — and a plain note when a recording is too noisy to trust.

Honest about its own numbers

No number is better than a wrong one

A fingertip camera is not a chest strap, and the app says so when it matters. If your finger moved, too few beats came through, or the figures sit far outside what a resting heart produces, you're told — instead of shown a number with false confidence.

Frequently asked questions

How can a phone camera measure my heart rate?
Each heartbeat pushes a pulse of blood through your fingertip, which changes how much light it absorbs. With your finger over the rear camera and the flash, the app reads those tiny color changes — the same principle a clip-on pulse oximeter uses — and counts the beats.
How long does a measurement take?
About 45 seconds for your pulse. Variability figures need a steadier, longer signal, and the app only shows them when the recording supports them.
Can it measure blood pressure or blood oxygen?
No. A camera can read a pulse, but not blood pressure or oxygen saturation. You can log those by hand from a cuff and a pulse oximeter, and the app says so wherever you enter them.
Is Heart Rate & Health - Novaz free?
Yes. The free version includes 5 measurements, the last 7 days of history, day and week charts, and RMSSD on every reading. PRO adds unlimited measurements, your full history, SDNN, pNN50 and beat-to-beat spread, and PDF export.
Where is my data stored?
On your phone. There is no account and no server. Camera frames are processed as they arrive and never saved or uploaded, and nothing is sold or shared.
Is it a medical device?
No. It is a wellness app. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. If a reading worries you or you feel unwell, speak to a doctor.
