Target heart rate zones for exercise
Target heart rate zones help you judge how hard you're working. The American Heart Association gives a simple way to estimate them.
Work out your zones
- Estimate your maximum heart rate: 220 minus your age. At 40, that's about 180 bpm.
- Moderate intensity is about 50–70% of that — roughly 90 to 126 bpm at 40.
- Vigorous intensity is about 70–85% — roughly 126 to 153 bpm at 40.
Keep in mind
- These are estimates; your true maximum can differ.
- Some medications, such as beta blockers, lower your heart rate and change your zones.
- Build up gradually, and ask your doctor what's right for you.
FAQ
- Can I use the camera measurement during exercise?
- Camera readings need you to be still, so they suit resting pulse, not measurement mid-workout. Use a wearable for exercise, and the app for your resting trend.
