How to measure blood pressure at home and log it
A camera can't measure blood pressure. Use a validated upper-arm cuff, then log the reading in the app so it's charted alongside your pulse.
Take an accurate reading
- Avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for 30 minutes before.
- Sit quietly for five minutes, back supported and feet flat on the floor.
- Rest your arm on a table at heart level, with the cuff on bare skin.
- Take two or three readings a minute apart, at the same time each day.
- Log the result in the app.
American Heart Association categories
- Normal — below 120 and below 80 mmHg.
- Elevated — 120–129 and below 80.
- Stage 1 hypertension — 130–139 or 80–89.
- Stage 2 hypertension — 140 or higher, or 90 or higher.
- Hypertensive crisis — above 180 and/or above 120: seek care right away, especially with symptoms.
Categories differ
The app labels each reading with a category, and guidelines differ between countries. Follow the thresholds your doctor uses for you. Heart Rate & Health is a wellness app, not a medical device. It doesn't diagnose, treat or prevent any condition. If a reading worries you or you feel unwell, speak to a doctor.
